“Tribal Unicorn is about owning who you are”: Angelica Bagot has transformed a creative outlet into a ‘candle freak’ community

When candle PR has earned the bag selling serenity and relaxation, it would be no surprise if you thought home fragrance was for the quiet moments. But Tribal Unicorn spins self-care into unapologetic self-expression: vibrant and maximalist, these scented candles have colour-popping personality on full volume. For founder Angelica Bagot, it’s about sparking daily joy and celebrating who you are.

What is Tribal Unicorn and what’s the mission behind it?

Tribal Unicorn Candle Bar is an east London-based lifestyle brand creating bold, beautiful, luxury candles and home fragrances. Every piece is hand-poured using environmentally-friendly coconut and rapeseed wax, with the highest quality fragrance oils and essential oils.

Our mission is to spark joy and empower individuality – giving people a way to celebrate themselves, their culture, and their well-being through fragrance and home décor.

How did you get started? What did the candle-making process look like at the beginning?

It started back in 2017 at my kitchen table as a hobby; let me just say the first candles I made were pretty bad! I was experimenting with wax, fragrance, and design, and quickly became obsessed with making 3D-embedded and uniquely designed candles that were as visually striking as they were fragrant.

In the beginning, it was messy – lots of testing, tweaking, and learning – but also magical, because I realised I’d found something that blended creativity, craft, and storytelling. I realised that beige doesn’t have to mean boring! The want and need to have something beautiful on my shelf that represented my spirit and looked good is what drove me to keep creating.

How does Tribal Unicorn reflect your own identity and self-expression?

The brand is deeply inspired by my British-Caribbean roots: vibrant, unapologetic, and celebratory. Tribal Unicorn is about owning who you are, turning up the volume on your personality, and creating beauty in everyday rituals.

For me, it’s a reflection of my culture, my love of storytelling, and my belief that fragrance and design can bring joy and confidence into people’s lives.

What are some of your bestselling candles? What’s the meaning behind their names and what do they smell like?

Cashmere is warm, soft, and luxurious, like slipping into your favourite knit; a perfect dinner party scent. This luxe candle not only represents the ‘rich aunty’ within but also celebrates where the minimalist meets maximalist in both its fragrance and design.

Protecting My Peace is soothing, grounding, and calming – a self-care ritual in a candle. It was created to bring some calm to the chaos because protecting our peace is so important in today’s world. I wanted us to have something that really grounds us and reminds us of happy days and spring, even in the gloomiest months. A burst of freshness has the ability to reignite the mind.

“Each name tells a story and captures a mood”

Bougie is playful and extra, designed for those who love to indulge in the finer things. Created to represent the ‘bougie’ bosses and babes out there who unapologetically step into their beautiful personalities. It’s about taking a word that can sometimes be seen as a negative and owning it – because, “yes i am bougie and I like it!”.

Sugar Daddy is sweet yet sophisticated, with a cheeky wink in the name – because it’s not everyday we need to be serious! Our customers love this candle; it smells great and has been a bestseller for years, but also it’s a nod to the cheeky candle freaks who aren’t afraid to have a little “lol”. Quite simply, Sugar Daddy was created for those who want to manifest ‘the bag’. And there’s nothing wrong with it; manifest away my friends.

Kiki [limited edition for summer] is fruity, fun, and full of nostalgia, inspired by rooftop hangs and BBQ vibes. “Summer, summer, summertime!” This candle is a sunset in a jar; it’s absolutely gorgeous and the fans of fruity fragrances will love it too. It’s a summer exclusive though, so get your hands on it while you still can.

Each name tells a story and captures a mood, so people can find the candle that feels like them. ‘Boldly Scented – Unapologetically Yours’ – it’s in the slogan.

What kind of people are drawn to your brand?

Our customers are quirky, fun, unapologetically themselves – bold, creative, and culture-driven. They’re candle freaks who love beauty, luxury, and a good vibe.

I want Tribal Unicorn to make them feel celebrated, uplifted, and joyful – like they’re adding a spark of magic to everyday life.

Talk us through your recent rebrand.

The rebrand was about refining our look and feel to truly match the boldness of the products and the customers who buy them. We introduced sharper visuals, bolder typography, and stronger storytelling that reflects the confidence of the brand.

The reception has been amazing: people say it feels more “grown”, more luxe, and more unapologetic, while still being playful and unique.

What is your newest product and what inspired it?

Our newest addition is our candle-making workshops: a way for people to experience the creative process first-hand. I wanted to give people not just a product, but an experience – a chance to play, design, and connect with fragrance and self-expression the way I did when I first started.

What’s coming next for the brand?

I’m expanding Tribal Unicorn beyond candles: we’re exploring new lifestyle products that are still rooted in luxury fragrance, sustainability, and individuality. Think more ways to spark joy in your home and daily rituals.

What does Tribal Unicorn mean to you as your creative outlet?

It’s my playground. It’s where I can experiment, be bold, and push boundaries. It allows me to take inspiration from my culture, my community, and my own experiences – and transform them into something that people can hold, smell, and feel joy from.

As a business owner, what’s been your biggest win so far?

One of my proudest moments has been building a loyal community of candle freaks who genuinely connect with the brand. Seeing people light up – literally and emotionally – when they talk about their favourite Tribal Unicorn candle is a constant reminder of why I started.

And being stocked on platforms like Jamii, alongside other incredible Black-owned businesses, has been a real milestone. It’s been a journey and over the past few years we’ve graced the homes of many celebrities, made custom candles for the Brit Awards goodie bags, been sold in Sephora and John Lewis, and more!

There are so many milestone moments, but the constant is the incredible Candle Freak community.
