“Diaspora Socks Represents Culture, Education & Unity”: Quickfire With Diaspora Socks Creator Remi Butler-Najair

We originally interviewed Remi as part of our spotlight on Birmingham-based makers in the May-July edition of our Little Black Book.

Diaspora Socks began merely as a fundraiser for a Ghanaian orphanage; designing socks emblazoned with flags and national symbols was creator Remi’s way of supporting his friend’s campaign. But he’d stumbled onto a huge demand for apparel that proudly celebrated the African diaspora, and Diaspora Socks has since evolved into a fully-fledged, thriving side hustle.

In three words, what does Diaspora Socks represent for you?

Diaspora Socks represents culture, education and unity.

What’s your most popular pair of socks?

The most popular pair in the line are the Maroons (Jamaica) Socks. It’s the first and only pair to sell out. Shout out to all my fellow Jamaicans.

How do you balance the business with other responsibilities?

Luckily I am self-employed so I can dictate my work day. I balance each day as much as I can by dedicating the necessary time as and when it suits.

What’s been your biggest success so far?

I would just say getting it launched, full stop: turning an idea into reality and maintaining happy, satisfied customers.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Trying to figure out ways to market the designs that dont sell so well without it costing so much. Marketing is not cheap.

You can never be too ambitious. What’s a long-term goal you have that you’re already working towards for the business?

Getting more international sales and representation. At the moment I would like to see the brand more outside the UK.

What’s coming next for Diaspora Socks?

New designs and more sizes directed at kids and babies as there is high demand for this. I’ve had customers asking for a while now.
