Proverbs: Learn from the past
Existing in two forms, the proverb relating to the Sankofa symbol is to “learn from the past”. The symbol displayed here reflects this imagery beautifully by depicting a bird reaching towards an egg on its back. Reflection is the key focus of this symbol, more so the awareness that can be gained from looking at past situations. In doing this, growth can occur, using the experiences from the past as the foundation and stepping stones for the future.
This beautiful handmade piece has been crafted using fine bone china. Bone China is the strongest of the porcelain or china ceramics, having high mechanical strength and chip resistance, and is known for its high levels of whiteness and translucency. It’s lovely and light to hold and transcends real luxury. Please note that our mugs are dishwasher safe. Our gold banded mugs however are not microwavable.

About The Maker
Sophisticated, timeless, elegant. ONUA is siblings Emmanuela and Philip’s way of bringing West African culture to everyone through homeware. Their homage to Ghana is there in the name – ONUA is the Twi translation for ‘sibling’ – as well as their love of adinkra symbols that adorn their mugs and furniture.
Before coming to the UK, Emmanuela and Philip were born in the Netherlands – and they love the trio of cultures they’ve grown up around. ONUA is their way of fusing these into homeware that’s rich, regal, and tells a story.
